Last Monday night ended in the emergency room. Without getting too graphic, I was opening a wax-covered disk of cheese with a brand new knife and one blink later, there was a gash in the soft fleshy skin between my thumb and pointer finger. It was pretty gnarly. I’m grateful that my sister was home and able to take me to the ER. I’m grateful for health insurance. I’m grateful for everything that has come after.
I can’t explain it, but slicing my hand made a lot of things clear. I’ve been feeling stuck for a long time. Lately, I’ve been circling around what I think I want versus what I ~should~ do. And here’s what I want:
I want to take on additional freelance work with the goal of depending entirely (or at least mostly) on this work.
I’m writing this here and sending it out for two reasons. One, as a way to let people know— Hey y’all, I’m looking for more work! And two, to get more comfortable asking for what I want. It’s something that I struggled with for a very long time, but if you don’t say anything, you never it.
So, what services can I provide?
Content writing, branding, social media content creation, newsletters, and blogs.
Arts and cultural criticism and reporting, longform creative nonfiction, personal essays, humor writing, and op-eds.
Proofreading and copyediting, particularly in AP Style.
Brainstorming, brain picking, and other creativity consulting.
Audio producing, editing, and storytelling.
Teaching public speaking. Specifically, I want to teach public speaking for writers.
On the other hand, here are the things I don’t do:
Technical writing.
Grant writing.
Anything dry and boring. My strengths lie in personality and color.
And of course, a link to my site with clips and samples.
So, that’s what I’m up to and where I want to go. If you have anything that needs done, please get in touch, or if not, please it pass it along to someone else. Never know.
I do know that a year ago, I never would have ever considered this. For a year that made me stay put most of the time, a lot of things have changed. It’s scary and exciting at the same time.
Take care and have a good weekend,
Love, Andrea
Happy to say that I no longer have to wear that wrist brace and I get the stitches out this week.
Big thank you for all your support, including reading this ol’ newsletter. I write and edit this myself (rather quickly), so please forgive any spelling or grammar errors. Links to my social and website can be found below. If you’d like to buy me a cup of coffee here or here, I would say cheers in your name. Feel free to send along any questions or comments. xox
Love the idea of teaching public speaking for writers! That's awesome.
